I am looking forward to seeing you all after our summer break. I hope you had a lovely, restful summer.

I will be back teaching half-time again this year, but I will be at Sheldon in the mornings this fall - so it won't cause a problem for SWAP at all. I don't know what will happen in the Spring, but we I will do my best to make sure I don't lose you.

One change in the fall will be that our SWAP classroom will now be the Computer Lab - room 309. I know this is a bit confusing, but I'm sure you will be able to adjust! Ms. Elberg is now using my old classroom all day, and I will be teaching my morning classes in the computer lab.

More information will be sent home by your advisory teacher.
Sheldon-Williams Collegiate School Community Council (SCC)
The Sheldon-Williams School Community Council welcomes staff, students and families back for another school year. We extend a warm welcome to families and staff who are new to our school.  In 2016-2017 the Sheldon-Williams School Community Council will continue to promote mutual understanding between the school and the community. This council will share responsibility for the learning success and well-being of all Sheldon-Williams students. The SCC will work on school planning and school improvements for the upcoming year. The School Community Council consists of the school principal and vice principal, a teacher(s), students and members of the Student Leadership Council, parents/guardians and/or community members. The SCC meets once a month for about one hour. Please consider joining the SCC.

SWAP:  Sheldon-Williams Advisory Program
Students attending Sheldon-Williams are placed into the SWAP program. Students from grades nine to twelve will meet with their SWAP teacher throughout the year. We also encourage regular contact between parents and the SWAP teacher. This allows both the student and the parents to build a relationship with their advisory teacher.
PowerSchool - Parent Portal
Parent Portal is a convenient and efficient internet based way for parents to monitor their student’s progress on a daily or weekly bases.  All parents can have access to their child(ren)’s attendance and marks by setting up a Parent Portal account.

Please contact your child’s SWAP teacher or the office at (306) 523-3550 to learn how to set up your account.
Setting up your account in the first week or two of school will help you monitor your son or daughter’s progress and assist in a successful start to the school year.

Extra-Curricular and Co-Curricular Activities
Opportunities for students to learn and practice new skills take place both inside and outside of the classroom. A very important part of our school program includes extra-and co-curricular activities available to students. Students are encouraged to become involved, learn new skills and make new friends. Emphasis is placed on personal growth, team or group participation and sportsmanship. Student leadership and decision-making are promoted through all extra-curricular activities.
Attendance
Attendance is a prerequisite for academic achievement. We expect students to make a commitment to be responsible and accountable regarding their attendance. We follow a policy of continuous evaluation, which requires students to participate in classroom activities each day. We need the support of parents/guardians regarding attendance to help students achieve success. Please be sure to telephone the school at (306) 523-3550 if your child is absent.
One of the most important things a student can do is to establish strong bonds with his/her teacher. Regular attendance and accountability by students are strong indicators of effort and willingness to cooperate. We appreciate your support of our school programs. Do not hesitate to call or visit at any time.

Timetables
If you require a timetable change please contact the office at (306) 523-3550 to schedule an appointment. Appointments can be booked starting the week of August 22, 2016.

School Fees
School fees will be available to be paid online once again this school year starting in September.

Welcome to Grade 10 Swaplings!

There are a few things you should know about this new school year:

1) NEW Bonus SWAP teacher and NEW SWAP Room!

As Mrs. Mishra mentioned back in the spring, she will be teaching only half time this year, in the afternoons. So she won't be around every day for SWAP - but DON'T WORRY! You haven't been abandoned! Mrs. Mishra is still one of your SWAP teachers, but she will be sharing you with Ms. Davies!

Also, SWAP will be moving to Ms. Davies' room, which is room 205 (just 1 classroom over). So every day for SWAP you will go to Ms. Davies' room, and she will be there to meet you. Some days, but probably not every day of every week, Mrs. Mishra will also be there. We will be working together and sometimes trading off days to do activities, announcements, and check up on your progress through Grade 10.

This means that you have TWO dedicated, caring teachers looking out for you! Actually, Ms. Davies has an intern this year, so for the Fall Semester you will actually have THREE SWAP teachers - lucky Swaplings!

Here are your SWAP teachers, all ready to greet you on the first day back!

2) New Reminder Program - Class Messenger
Last year we used the program Remind to keep in touch with you and your parents, and to send you reminders of deadlines, etc. This year, we will be switching to a new program called Class Messenger, which is the same idea, but has more features (including being able to send messages to Mrs. Mishra and Ms. Davies). Please see the instructions below on how to sign up. We strongly encourage parents and guardians to sign up as well!

To sign up:
Option 1: Click on the link for your course below to sign up for text or email reminders
SWAP 10C: http://cmsngr.co/YTTJDTYKXD

Option 2: Sign up by Text
Send a text with the course code (see below) to this number (650) 252-1369 and then follow instructions
SWAP 10C: NYJC4R

Option 3: Sign up by Email (send a blank email to this address)
SWAP 10C: NYJC4R@signup.classmessenger.com

3) New Expectations for Grade 10
Now that you are in Grade 10, teachers have higher expectations of you, both academically, and in terms of your behaviour. You will have more homework, and more tests and major assignments in your classes. If you fall behind, it's important to get caught up right away, so that you don't fall further behind. Remember that it's always easier to KEEP UP than it is to CATCH UP!

Remember that from here on out, your classes count as credits toward graduation, and if you don't pass a class, you don't get the credit and you will have to re-take the course. If you fail too many classes, you will not be able to graduate on time unless you take summer school. It's our goal to get you to be successful and pass all of your classes so that you can graduate on time.

Welcome to your home within the school!

SWAP (Sheldon-Williams Advisory Program) is a daily "homeroom" class where we can touch base, create a little community with a smaller group of people (who you will stay with throughout high school), learn some life skills, and also have some fun! One of the things most students look forward to is "Food Friday" - which is a tradition of taking turns bringing a treat for the SWAP group every Friday; it makes school a little tastier!

For the first few weeks we will be doing mostly community building activities to get to know each other and bond as a group, as well as some goal-setting for grade 9 and the rest of high school, and of course some of the paperwork that always has to happen at the start of the year. Later on this year we will learn some stress-busting and relaxation techniques, discuss some life skills, watch some fun or interesting videos, do some neat activities, and maybe even the occasional pot luck or other fun activity outside of SWAP time.

Who am I? I will be your main teacher contact and advocate throughout the school year - so if you have a problem, question, or concern (or an idea about how to make the Sheldon experience even better), I am the first person to talk to. If you want to learn a little more about who I am, check out my personal profile here.
I will also be the teacher who usually calls home to touch base with your parents or caregivers, and I may also act as a mediator/advocate between you, your caregivers, and your subject teachers and administrators if the need arises. It's my goal that you will be successful in high school, so I will check in with you weekly (or more often) about how things are going both personally and in your various classes. This means that if you are falling behind in a subject, I will be on your case about it! It is so much easier to keep up than it is to catch up!

One way to stay caught up and "in the loop" is to check this blog and the SWAP 9C calendar regularly. I also strongly suggest that you sign up for Remind to get my most up-to-date reminders.
